Professor Ahmed Rashid

As Pro-Director Education, Ahmed is a member of the University Executive Team, with responsibility for leading the strategic development, enhancement and delivery of education programmes across the institution.

Ahmed is a clinical academic and combined postgraduate medical training in the UK National Health Service with an NIHR academic clinical fellowship at the Institute of Public Health at the University of Cambridge, and a year spent as the National Medical Director's Clinical Fellow at the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence. In addition to medical qualifications, he holds a Master's degree (with Distinction) from Imperial College London and a Doctoral degree in Education from University College London.

Prior to joining LSHTM, he was Professor of Medical Education at UCL and Vice Dean of the UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Ahmed has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians London, and Principal Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy.

Ahmed has held various education leadership roles, including on the undergraduate medical courses at the University of Cambridge and University College London, as well as national roles including Chief Examiner and Panel Member for the General Medical Council PLAB exam and Medical Director for Training for the Royal College of General Practitioners. He has served as External Examiner for a number of universities in the UK and overseas. He has also advised Ministries of Higher Education and Ministries of Health regarding medical education, and served as an accreditation review member and chair for national accreditation bodies.

Research

Ahmed's research explores the intersection between medicine, global health, and education policy, with a focus on power, politics, and inequities. In 2022, his research programme was recognised by the award of the Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education Fellowship. He is an Honorary Professor at University College London Medical School and Visiting Education Scientist at the Wilson Centre in Toronto. He has served on the editorial boards of various medical journals and is currently Associate Editor of Clinical Medicine.
